 Concrete Utopia (2023) is a South Korean disaster-thriller film directed by Um Tae-hwa and starring Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-joon and Park Bo-young. The film is based on the second part of webtoon Pleasant Bullying by Kim Soongnyung, which is about an earthquake and its aftermath. It was theatrically released on August 9, 2023 and was selected as South Korea’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 96th Academy Awards.

Plot

The film follows a group of survivors who gather at an apartment building in Seoul, the only structure left standing in the city after it is destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake. The apartment residents are led by Yeong-tak (Lee Byung-hun), a new representative who is determined to do whatever it takes to protect their property from outsiders. Among them are Min-seong (Park Seo-joon), a public servant, and his nurse wife Myeong-hwa (Park Bo-young), who try to cope with the harsh reality and maintain their family bond.

As time passes, the apartment becomes overcrowded and resources become scarce, leading to conflicts and tensions among the residents and the newcomers. The film explores the themes of survival, human nature, morality, and social order in a post-apocalyptic setting.
